Financial Support and Medley Hall Fee-Remission Bursaries
Medley awards over $300,000 in bursaries each year to eligible students on the basis of financial need. On average, 1 in 3 students at Medley Hall receive some form of financial assistance from the College to help with residential fees. It is our aim to make a place at Medley Hall available to students who have been accepted into their course at the University of Melbourne and who would otherwise be unable to experience the benefits of living in a college community.
The fee-remission program comprises the following bursaries and scholarships:
Cybec Foundation Bursaries
The Cybec Foundation, founded by Roger Riordan, has supported a growing number of Medley students since 2006. The foundation aims to encourage academic excellence, assist the less fortunate, care for the environment and support the Arts. The foundation’s donation of $1 million played a vital role in Medley Hall's recent renovations and building works.
The bursaries come with the expectation that those who benefit will reciprocate by taking on responsibilities within the College and the wider community. It is our hope and expectation that students who are helped in this way will then "pass it on" when they are able to do so in the future.
Eligibility: Students in financial need will be considered.* Students from universities other than the University of Melbourne are also eligible to apply. Study abroad and exchange students are not eligible to apply. Duration: 1 year (re-application required each year). Number available: Varies.
Robert and Gretta Wilkinson Scholarship
This is a fee-remission scholarship for domestic students enrolled in a course at the University of Melbourne who are, or will be resident at Medley Hall, who are in financial need, and from a rural background. No separate application is required for this scholarship.
Eligibility: Australian students from a rural background in financial need. Duration: 1 year (re-application required each year). Number available: up to 10 depending on the value.
The Griffin Fund
This fund was established to provide fee-remission for First Nations students living at Medley Hall who are in financial need.
Eligibility: First Nations students in financial need who have been offered a place at Medley Hall. Study abroad and exchange students are not eligible to apply. Duration: 1 year (re-application required each year). Number available: up to 10 depending on the value.
Melbourne Access Scholarship
For 2023 entry, eligible students can secure an early Residential College Scholarship and Melbourne Access Scholarship of up to $17,500 per year for three years. This scholarships package will support First Nations students and/or regional students from a disadvantaged financial background to stay in colleges during their degree. Eligible applicants will receive a $10,000 Residential Colleges Scholarship together with a Melbourne Access Scholarship of up to $7,500. To be considered for this scholarship, students must apply to a residential College, apply for Access Melbourne using the VTAC Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) and meet the eligibility criteria for the Melbourne Access Scholarship. Applicants should apply to the College by end of October 2022 and meet the Access Melbourne closing date of 5pm Friday 7 October.
*International Student Support
We do consider international students for financial support in some circumstances. We recommend that international students explore the University of Melbourne scholarship opportunities in the first instance. More information can be found at Expanded Scholarships (unimelb.edu.au)
First Nations Students
The Residential Cost Option covers 100% of college fees for eligible students. Residents who receive the Residential Cost Option can also apply for additional financial support for living expenses through our bursary program.
The Indigenous Accommodation Grant is for University of Melbourne students who are ineligible for ABSTUDY's Residential Cost Option and is $10,000 in fee-remission. Current students and 2023 applicants are eligible. This grant is managed by the scholarships team with support from Murrup Barak.
