I’m Alyssa, I’m 20 years old, and I am a Tagalaka woman. I was born in Queensland but I currently live in Darwin, when I’m not in Melbourne. I’m studying a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in marketing) at the University of Melbourne.

The way I found out about Medley Hall was quite unconventional. I finished high school in 2019 and I knew I was going to university.  I had applied to UniMelb and was accepted. From there, I started looking at student accommodation and Medley was recommended to me by some high school friends. So, I trusted their opinion and sent in my application.

The thing I love most about living at Medley, is the location. It is central to everything. It’s close to Carlton Gardens, the city and other suburbs like Fitzroy. It’s a really good location.  I also love going up to the rooftop and soaking up the sun. Also, at Medley there is Benvenuta (the old part of the building) and I particularly like utilizing the balcony area where I can sit down and find a quiet space. I also enjoy studying in the PSR (with the fireplace on, when it’s freezing outside!)

The staff are always very helpful, and willing to make time for all their student. The staff have helped me a lot with my academic journey, particularly having to deal with student processes and all things administration.

Meals are really good and I especially enjoy lunch which is soup, sandwiches and cooked meals such as rice and curry.  There is just a lot of variety which is very important to me.

I am able to speak to the catering staff and in particular, Jelena in the kitchen, and it feels like they really listen to and value everybody’s feedback. Knowing this really makes a difference.

This year I have contributed to the Medley community more than I have in past. I have reached out to a lot more people this year.  I was involved with the Ball Committee and I have attended Medley events such as Movie Night and Study Hall. It has been harder to engage with everybody during the lockdown period, however, seeing people during meal times, or having a brief chat if you see them in the hallways is a nice way to stay connected. I also think that everyone involved in the Medley community has been super supportive and found alternative ways to interact and have fun.

Medley in 3 words: Community-orientated, Supportive, and Comfortable.
